A consistent meditation practice brings with it a whole host of interesting experiences both internally and externally.
As we deepen our awareness we begin to perceive things differently and with more clarity. One common experience when meditating is seeing different colors, shapes and forms.
It’s not always obvious why we are having certain experiences or if we should even pay attention to them at all.
In today’s post I want to explore the meaning of seeing green color during meditation.
What does seeing green while meditating mean?
Sometimes seeing colors during meditation simply means we are relaxed and our mind is operating in differently ways than it usually would. If you’ve ever experienced sensory deprivation, for example in a float tank, you’ll know this to be true.
What makes spiritual experience distinct is how it makes you feel. When you see a color and also feel incredibly grounded, uplifted, or notice it come alongside an intuitive message, then you know you’re dealing with something extra-sensory.
In the past when I’ve perceived green while meditating I have also felt a guide/angel nearby, and gotten very specific gut feelings that let me know it was deeper than just a visual experience.
One of the first colors I noticed in meditation was blue, not long after this I saw green. This was in one particular meditation when I was in the process of opening up my heart chakra.
I saw a deep green color to the side of my vision, and as I allowed my awareness to settle on it, I saw a beautiful cord streaming towards my heart.
Heart chakra opening
Seeing green during meditation often connects to a heart chakra opening:
- You are clarifying your boundaries
- You are opening up to new opportunities
- You are learning to love yourself
- You are doing deeper shadow work
- Your discernment is increasing
You’ll often know your heart chakra is opening because it feels as if energy wants to burst out of your chest…literally.
The heart chakra, our hearts (energetic not just physical) hold sooo much. We are incredibly resilient as humans, although that cannot be taken for granted. So many of us are carrying around lifetimes of pain, grief, sadness.
Oftentimes we don’t even realize our heart chakras are overloaded because they have such a capacity. As we do the inner work a lot of this old stuff can flow out all at once.
Opening the heart chakra is not for everyone – it requires a steady balance between opening yourself to new opportunities while protecting your boundaries when you need to.
Sometimes we perceive a green color in meditation as a sign this center is becoming active or needs to!
This color can also represent needing space. Needing to be in wide open spaces quite literally; in nature, a bigger home or work environment. But also, to have more space to think and decompress, or to just be ourselves without other peoples’ inputs.
When we see green during meditations we be fairly certain we’re in a stage of life where we’re expanding our capacity for love, healing, and becoming more emotionally open and resilient.
Do colors during meditation always have a meaning?

Not all colors hold deep significance for us, and in a sense it’s important to remain objective – funny phrase to use when we’re talking about these things right.
Some colors represent a momentary awareness of something, not always deep metaphysical or personal message.
The most important thing you can do when you perceive any colors during meditation is to simply let go. Stay calm, focus on the breathe and let the color come and go naturally.
Should You Try to Interpret Meditation Colors?
Allow these experiences and then release them. If you see a color multiple times over the course of weeks, months, even years then there is probably a deeper message there for you.
I say this as suggestions, it is always advised to tune into your own intuition and see what it is guiding you to do. Get quiet, calm the mind and then ask your higher self what the best course of action is. Sometimes our intuition goes against ‘best practices’.
Otherwise just know your awareness is growing stronger and sink into your practice & the present moment.
When Colors in Meditation Become More Frequent
Seeing colors in meditation can become a frequent experience, that is where detachment becomes more important. Again, we can become overly attached to what this means.
Quite simply, your chakras are becoming more open and therefore more energy can flow through this. This leads to a bunch of interesting sensations and experiences. Vibrations, tingles, a rocking motion in the body.
It is common to also see:
- Shapes & geometry
- Flashes of light
- Vortexes and other space-like phenomena
- Into the astral dimension (to perceive guides, angels or low-vibrational beings)
FAQ Section
Why do I see green lights when I close my eyes during meditation?
It can happen due to regular brain activity enhanced by a relaxed state, often induced by meditation or bodily awareness. On a spiritual level green is connected to the heart chakra, and represents deeper emotional awareness, healing and sensitivity.
Is seeing green during meditation a good sign?
Yes, seeing green while meditating can be a good sign, in the sense that your spiritual awareness is increasing.
Does green always mean the heart chakra is opening?
No, not necessarily. Green can bring awareness to a closed heart chakra too, you can gauge this by how open you feel in day to day life, how receptive you feel to receiving love, compliments etc.
Why do the colors disappear when I focus on them?
As with a lot of spiritual phenomena, the more you attach the less you get. So it is important to let go of any particular goal and simply be with the experience fully.
Should I try to make the color appear again?
This is a very common question and I understand the desire to do so, however it is best to remain detached from the experience and not try to replicate or chase after it!
What does it mean to see green during reiki?
Reiki puts us into a calm state, along with allowing our heart chakra to open, so this is a very common experience. Sharing space with any potent spiritual practitioner holds this potential too, depending on how receptive we are.
