How to Practice Breathwork to Reach Higher States

It is currently Sunday here, which means my weekly energy reset. This involves a lot of breathwork; I find there isn’t a time I do breathwork and don’t experience some sort of breakthrough.

Breathwork, if you don’t already know, is the practice of conscious breathing. So often when we are in anxious environments our breathing become shallow (from the chest rather than belly) by default. This puts us in a fight or flight state.

Breathing more deeply and slowly brings us out of this somewhat, and we have a chance to look at our circumstances from a calmer space.

I like to reference an image of the caduceus sometimes in this process, with the staff in the middle representing the spine, we can see there are channels that flow just outside of the physical body.

When breathing in, feel with your awareness energy being pulled up through these channels, when breathing out feel the energy flowing back down.

When you are pulling up you will start to feel more energized. When you are pushing down, clearing any stuck or stagnant energies.

It’s common to feel some tingling, vibrations or even hear buzzing in the ears. This will lessen with practice as the channels strengthen.

Another way I do breathwork is color or auric breathing.

Get into a meditative/calm state, and then ask your intuition for a color. Doesn’t matter if this comes through as a visual, sensation or just the word itself. Don’t overthink it too much, just go with that color for now and as you breathe in and out, visualize your aura filling with it.

This technique is great for restoring your energy the colors that come can represent some strength or quality you are wanting to reclaim and strengthen in yourself.

Sometimes different colors also represent clearing/healing. With time you get more trusting of what colors come up for you.

It’s important to not just breathe mechanically but also feel the energy flow that comes with it, moving throughout your entire body.

This makes the practice more beneficial on a spiritual/non-physical level. Sometimes you will start to feel as if a ball of energy is bouncing between root and crown chakra as you do this. You’re no longer forcing it and the energy is starting to flow more organically.

Deeper breaths lead to deeper parts of yourself

Don’t be surprised if you get a bit emotional, cry for no apparent reason or feel some old memories coming up.

This is what happens when your energy is being cleared. Also expect new ideas & inspiration to flow, best to have a notepad ready!
