How the Universe Leads You to Your Purpose

How the Universe Leads You to Your Purpose

The Universe will not put a dream in your heart, if it doesn’t also plan to put everything you need to make that dream a reality on your path too.

By dream I am being very specific here. I don’t mean, become a lawyer because that’s what your parents want. I don’t mean, become a millionaire because that’s what will impress others. I mean a dream that is well and truly designed for you.

These are what I call ‘true dreams’ and what I want to discuss in today’s blog posts. How to know the Universe is leading you towards your purpose, and not squander your own blessings.

What is your soul purpose?

In the spiritual space there are many terms we use to describe your purpose. Soul purpose is the one I resonate most with, but you’ll also find destiny, dharma, life’s mission, your ‘work’.

What all of these terms refer to, in one way or another, is an energetic seed within each person. A desire or duty that gently unfolds throughout the course of one’s life and as they gain awareness or awaken.

The way I view desire is that there are two kinds – the egoic kind, such as becoming a lawyer or millionaire as mentioned, only because it would boost our image. Then there are soul desires (this could include becoming a millionaire or doctor) that would directly aid in the development of our consciousness.

Our soul purpose can be something incredibly mundane or ‘small’ in scope, such as becoming a parent (any parent knows this is hardly small in reality), being the best at your ‘regular’ job, or just being happy. Then there are soul purposes that are much ‘grander’ in scope, such as becoming a business owner or working with the public in a positive and uplifting manner.

There’s no greater or bigger purpose than another really, it is all about the positive intention behind it, and a role that just makes sense for us over the long-term.

How the Universe guides you

How the Universe guides you

There are many ways in which the Universe will gently nudge us toward us purpose, or quite obviously pull us there.

First let’s start with signs. Signs can come in many forms, such as synchronicities, number sequences, words or phrases that repeat in our mind over and over, messages we pick up in song lyrics, a repeating symbol, chance encounters.

It’s important not to get too attached to signs or obsess over them, but quite often our dreams will peek through in simple and often avoidable ways first.

The next way the Universe will lead us to our purpose is through inspiring action.

At first we are given quite a lot of freedom in how and when we take action on our intuition. The signs are subtler and unintrusive, the messages are not as ‘pressing’.

We might get some light inspiration to do a specific thing, connect to a specific person, put ourselves in a specific space. We might have a chance encounter with an old friend who nudges us towards a job opportunity. We might see the same location name repeated dozens of times in different ways – they stand out to us quite obviously.

However, what we ignore gradually gets louder and louder until we listen.

The Universe will present us with different experiences, perhaps uncomfortable or undesirable, in order to redirect us on our path.

The new neighbour or co-worker that makes our day to day life increasingly more bothersome. The recurring obstacle/s that pop up when we are acting out of accordance with our intuition.

We ignore or miss most of these signals because we aren’t in a receptive state for long or consistently enough. We’ll see an undesirable situation and get completely engrossed in it, rather than seeing it for the confirmation or redirection that we need…that we’ve been asking for!

The Universe of course, also brings us great experiences of joy to confirm what we already know we should do.

Often we have great, fun experiences, or meet interesting people, but don’t follow up in the way we should.

Joseph Campbell often talks about ‘following your bliss’ and while the phrase can often be misinterpreted or simplified, at the most basic level following what brings you joy in a constructive and mindful way is a good idea. At the very least, it’s a place to start.

How to take action on your purpose

We are not living in a world full of people without intuition, we are living in a world full of people who do not trust themselves.

Most of us know exactly what we should be doing. We have received the message over and over again, over many years in many different ways. We just don’t trust ourselves enough to take action on that insight.

Building self-trust is a gradual process that can take years. But we owe ourselves this patience, especially if we plan to build something that lasts a long time.

We can’t expect to do or be something great (no matter the scale) if we do not think we are worthy of the time.

If you’re struggling with self-trust start by building a small habit.

One small consistent self care practice. Writing one line in your journal a day, before moving to a half a page and then a whole one. Reach out to one new person guided by your intuition each week.

You want to build enough experiences you can look back on and go ‘I am capable of doing helpful things for myself’

If you forget to complete a habit for a day (or even a whole month) just go back to it. The energy and mindset you create around forming new habits is potentially even more important than the habit itself.

If every time you’re building a new habit you’re saying to yourself ‘If I slip up I am a failure’ or ‘If I don’t complete these tasks I’m an incapable person’. You’re not creating an energy around new habits that you would want to go back to anyway.

Frame your new routines as ways you are showing yourself love and support, get into that energy before you take any action at all – and it will be much easier to return to it in the future. You will want to, not out of pressure or fear, but out of pure enjoyment.
