Ego Desires Vs Soul Desires

ego soul desires

We all have desires, goals, dreams; things that we want or need. Desire sometimes gets a bad rep, especially in the spiritual space. The goal appears to be to relinquish desire completely.

I think this is a noble pursuit, and if it calls you, you should walk that path. It is true that we can become too attached to our desires, and this can destroy us completely on the extreme end.

However as a spiritual being having a human experience, I think there is a place for desire – as long as it’s put into the right contexts!

There is a difference between desiring something from the ego, and desiring something from the soul. That distinction is what I want to clear up with today’s blog post.

What are ego desires

Ego desires are goals that are mostly an attempt to boost our self image, cred with others, conform or to make ourselves feel safe.

To become a millionaire because that’s what would make others jealous. To be in a great looking relationship for the same reason. To be a doctor, solely because that’s what our parents want. To stay in a situation we know is not helping us in anyway, because it is comfortable and familiar.

Now to be clear, there is nothing wrong with having an ego or these sorts of desires. We all have an ego (I certainly do) and we will all have some desires that are there to keep us comfortable to an extent.

There’s no getting away from the fact that we have incarnated as humans, and have certain limitations and inclinations.

The point is to move in the direction of our soul or heart to the best of our abilities.

What are soul desires

Soul desires are goals that will align us with our own higher good and/or the highest good of everyone around us. These desires often aren’t easy or comfortable. They invite us to become the best version of ourselves, which is often out of the comfort zone.

The desire to become a teacher and share knowledge. To become a millionaire because we’d know what to do with the resources. To sing, dance, draw, anything that truly makes our soul light up.

A lot of these soul desires can have a bit of ego mixed in with them!

Even the most altruistic of pursuits can become a little self-involved. These labels are really just guidelines, and it’s always important to be discerning when using language to describe spiritual concepts that cannot be encapsulated simply.

How to identify ‘true dreams’

As I stated in the introduction…we all have dreams. Dreams that line up with our soul desires are what I call ‘true’ dreams. You could also use the term soul purpose or dharma.

They show up in your dreams, pop into your mind, or you are reminded of them in synchronistic ways constantly.

These are desires that come to you whether you are in a good or bad state, whatever phase of life you are in, and whether you are having success or failure in a particular area.

‘True dreams’ are ones that keep calling you…until you answer the call.

So how do you identify these true dreams if you haven’t already?

Get very quiet.

Go on a mindful walk, meditate, journal slowly and deliberately. When we are disconnected from our intuition, it is usually because there is too much external noise.

Our intuition isn’t hiding away something, behind a heavy door with a difficult to open lock. We just have to make space and trust what we hear.

I like to write down any insights or inspiration that comes, instead of just thinking I’ll give it importance or even remember it, just allowing it to sit in the mind.

The more you carve away time for quiet and reflection the more clarity you will gain on what your true dreams are. You won’t always get an answer that feels right or make sense the first time you tune in.

You can be more direct with your intuition if you’d like by asking a simple question ‘What do I want to create in my life?’

Be quiet and see what comes up in the form of thoughts, sensations, emotions or old memories. You can also take notice of the signs and synchronicities that show up on days where you’ve asked the question.

How to take action on your ‘true dreams’

The messages leading towards these true dreams start out small and subtle, but grow steadily in directness.

When we receive inspiration from the Universe, when we come to know what our true dreams are – we don’t just receive simple inspiration. We are also given a ‘package’ of energy or enthusiasm to get started. We will be attracted to the right people and places. Things will align in divine timing.

In order to take action on our soul desires or true dreams, we just have to listen, and not dismiss even our smallest intuitive insights.

When we receive a seemingly small or mundane intuitive insight, such as ‘Reach out to that person,’ or ‘Apply for that job.’ These are not intended as just the next step, they inevitably unravel more and more paths for us.

Trusting your intuition when it encourages you to go to an event you were uncertain about, can create an amazing butterfly effect that you couldn’t even predict.

In my own life I am always listening to these small insights. To take a different route on my way home. Go to that event. Call that person. Make a new meal for dinner. Whatever it is, I know that something bigger is probably going to play out from it.
