I have been meaning to write this blog posts for years! I’m not joking.
Over the course of several years I had non-stop dreams about flooding. There would be periods where I didn’t have any of these dreams at all…but I could count on them to return.
For the most part we can ignore our dreams, even relatively vivid ones, because we understand they are not “real”. However, if you’d had a recurring dream with vivid symbolism, especially for years at a time, you know how unnerving it can be even if you don’t quite grasp why.
It’s like your mind is trying to tell you something (well it is) but you’re not quite grasping it. In this post I want to bring some clarity, and explore the real meaning behind flood dreams.
Do recurring dreams mean anything?
Perhaps you are having these dreams and aren’t particularly unnerved by them, more so curious. Either way, you might be wondering if recurring dreams hold any true meaning.
I would say most times they do! If your subconscious mind feels a message is important enough, it will continuously show it to you in different forms until you understand.
Dreams are not random. While they may appear nonsensical, they represent the most direct communications of our spirit; unfiltered and unapologetic.
Sometimes we know something to be true, about ourselves or our reality, but we ignore it anyway. We find clever ways to avoid confronting the issue head on. But this ignorance doesn’t make the problem go away…in fact, it often makes the problem more prominent in our psyche.
It gets pushed down into our shadow side. This is the part of us that is hidden – the negative traits we are scared to look at, and the positive traits we aren’t confident to claim. This problem then manifests itself in more insidious ways.
Recurring dreams can represent:
- Emotional issues we’ve avoiding
- An omen of bad things to come
- Confirmation of our purpose
- Repressed memories
- An important message from spirit
The keys is that we take our dreams, especially recurring ones, seriously. Not every dream is ‘important’ in the grand scheme of things, but dreams in general are something to take note of – even just briefly – to understand where we are and where we are going in life.
I recommend keeping a regular dream journal so you can identify any commonalities you might be missing. Symbols that are not as obvious but persistent nonetheless.
Recurring dreams don’t just present us a problem, they aren’t our subconscious trying to be cruel, they also highlight a way out or solution if we pay attention.
Flooding dreams meaning
Let’s get to the juicy part, what do these dreams mean and what do they represent?
First of all I’d like to say that this will vary slightly from person to person, that should go without saying (so take this information in with discernment) but there are similarities in how you may interpret them because dreams pull from the collective unconscious.
When you dream of flooding it often represents running away from something – not a literal flood.
If you’ve had a real fear of floods, experience in floods etc then you can interpret this a little different. However, for most people, these dreams are symbolic.
You could be running away from an emotion: fear, anger, sadness, loneliness. You could be running away from something more practical: responsibility, a person or a place.
Does this seem pretty simplistic? Sure, but our dreams often are! A lot of the time people search out complex answers when the solution is right in front of their nose. While some dreams are more complicated and all hold complexity, usually the main message is quite simple.
Flooding dreams are a sign to slow down, get present, and see what in front of you need attention.
Similarly, flooding dreams can represent anxiety in general.
When interpreting dreams I recommend understanding both the bigger picture and smaller details. Go through everything with a fine-toothed comb.
Dreams about your house flooding: This brings in your sense of safety and security – the root chakra. This may refer to something physical or practical about the state of your home and anxieties related to it, or about the family dynamic you are experiencing.
Dreams about being trapped in a flood: Being trapped in a flood represents a blockage in intuition. The sense you are overwhelmed by what life is throwing at you, and can’t quite figure out what you’re here to do. This can also be more literal, representing a situation you are struggling to fix or escape from.
Dreams about running from a flood: You are in a state of fight or flight. Being overwhelmed by all sorts of different problems or avoiding them completely. You can run but you can’t hide.
Drowning in a flood: Water represents emotions (and this will apply to all of these). So drowning represents being completely overwhelmed by your emotions, you’ve likely tried to figure out a solution and didn’t come to one.
Surviving a flood: This represents motivation, resiliency, feeling there is light at the end of the tunnel.
Understanding the context of your dreams is very important in identifying how this scenario relates to specific areas in your life. You could also pay attention to what dream or real-life characters show up in these, to get an idea of how this symbolism relates to your interpersonal relationships too.
Yes, it is possible to have all/many of these dreams at different times too, I know I have!
How do you stop a recurring dream?
Here’s the question you’ve probably had on your mind reading. How do you stop these recurring dreams once and for all?
The answer is simple, face whatever it is the dream represents for you. Sometimes this means taking very direct action, but other times it is about changing a mindset or routine.
In all cases, you want to accept that you’re having these dreams. If you do nothing else, if you cannot make changes quickly, allow yourself to feel at peace knowing you have the information you need.
After a particularly vivid flooding dream I suddenly realized this representation from my subconscious was not random. I guess I kinda knew that on some level, but this time I said to myself I would do something about it.
With that came a wave of peace, I knew what was going on and what I had to do. I didn’t attach any heavy emotion to the dream, I simply accepted it for what it was.
The dreams stopped!
I cannot express how liberating it felt to finally make the connection, do something to change things and see my subconscious reflect that back. The shift was visceral.
Some dreams represent old wounds and energetic knots we’re holding in the body, when they untangle it can be extremely relieving. Not only do we transform one areas of our life, but everything else connected to it.
This is why I recommend keeping a dream journal. It’s a small act but it says to the subconscious that you’re paying attention, and you’re ready to make changes if you need to.
This strengthens the connection between your conscious and subconscious minds, your intuition, sense of wellbeing and overall spiritual development.
What to do if a recurring dream comes back?
About 5 years have passed from my initial realization about my recurring dreams and finding a solution. In that time I’ve had this dream only one time, just last year.
Now I will be completely honest…I was a little disappointed that this dream came back. As detached as I try to be, it’s difficult not to feel disheartened when something you thought you were over reappears.
However, I quickly came to acceptance about this. We are humans, we do not move perfectly through the world, and sometimes we take a step back. But I allowed this experience to be reminder to not get complacent.
My life had gotten hectic again, I was experiencing more anxiety – all my subconscious was trying to tell me was to slow down once again. It was reminding me…not punishing me.
If a recurring dream comes up again for you, approach it the exact same way. Allow yourself to feel the emotions that are coming up for you, accept the experience and see what actions you can take to remedy things.
